3 Ways to Reverse Negative Effects of Alcohol on the Liver

Before we go on to understanding the more serious long term effects of alcohol, it is important to first understand the short term effects of what happens to us as we drink alcohol.

As soon as we consume alcohol, approximately 20% of it is absorbed by the blood stream, the remainder being soaked up by the stomach and intestine lining, the alcohol then makes it's way to the liver and is deconstructed into water, CO2 and lipids. Our liver is capable of handling up to 1 pint an hour, this means that when we binge drink, the liver will require water to break down the alcohol.

But consuming alcohol also leads us excessively need the toilet, because of this water from other parts of the body is re-routed to the liver. This causes us to become dehydrated, all the while the liver is taking on alcohol, it produces a highly toxic substance referred to as acetaldehyde which is extremely harmful to the liver, stomach and brain. This is why we then suffer the dreaded hangover following the consumption of alcohol.

3 Long Term Effects of Alcohol on the Liver

Fatty Liver Disease: The long term effects of alcohol on the liver are far more sever than just a hangover. Overtime the effects of consuming alcohol will begin to effect how the liver functions. Over consumption of alcohol is the main cause of lots of serious liver diseases. Fats will build up around the liver and lead to fatty liver disease. At this point the only solution is to give up alcohol completely.

Alcoholic Hepatitis: Prolonged periods of consuming alcohol will cause the liver to become inflamed leading to a condition know as alcoholic hepatitis. The mortality rate of this disease is 60%. This disease can develop into cirrhosis or even liver failure.

Cirrhosis of the Liver: This is a complete shut down of all function of the liver. Build up of scar tissue blocks the free flow of essential blood leading to the build up of waste products and harmful toxins which will poison the body from the inside. Perhaps most worrying is that the symptoms of liver cirrhosis will only become apparent during the advanced stages of the disease at which point not much can be done except treating the symptoms.

3 Ways to help reverse the damage and negative effects of alcohol on the liver:

Stop Drinking. The sooner you can become sober for prolonged periods of time the better chance your body will have to repair itself.

Start a Healthy Diet. By losing a few pounds and supplying your body with extra vitamins, you will soon see a great improvement in your overall health. Low-fat diets with lots of whole grains, fruit and vegetables can almost certainly help you lose weight. It's also a great idea to take in extra antioxidants from natural sources, such as Vitamin D-rich foods like acai berries.

Take a Stem Cell Enhancer. Abundantly formed in your bodies bone marrow, adult stem cells are your bodies natural renewal system. As they are released into your system a single stem cell can become millions of new liver cells and help to repair the damaged areas. Studies have shown that a stem cell enhancer will increase the number of circulating stem cells by up to 25-30%.

Alcohol's Negative Impact on Liver Disease

If you have been diagnosed with any form of liver disease, you have probably also received a laundry list of lifestyle changes from your doctor. Being faced with such a long list of things you should or should not be doing from now on can be overwhelming, but you should always keep in mind that these changes are in the best interest of you and your liver. Many of these changes involve dietary modifications, and are fairly easy to adapt to. However, some may be more challenging. One suggestion in particular that many people with liver disease tend to ignore is removing alcohol from their diets.

For whatever reason, some people just do not realize the damage alcohol can do to this already weakened organ. Alcohol is a toxin: public enemy number one to the liver. When you have any liver disease, this organ already is not functioning as efficiently as it should be, so why add fuel to an already burning fire? If you are still consuming alcoholic beverages even though you have liver disease, you are voluntarily putting toxins into your body, which does nothing to help your liver fight against further damage.

ALCOHOLIC HEPATITIS

Many people with severe, chronic liver diseases, such as Hepatitis C, often struggle with a fluctuating viral load. Recent research has shown a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and viral load. Simply put, those people who drink alcohol are at a higher risk of having a dangerously elevated viral load than someone who abstains from alcohol altogether. Furthermore, studies have shown that alcohol consumption interferes with standard medical treatment for Hepatitis C; it renders interferon therapy much less effective than it would normally be for a non-drinker.

Alcohol is no friend to the liver, and should be kept far away from this vital organ when battling liver disease. Anyone who keeps alcohol in their diet is actively harming their own liver. Because alcohol is so addictive, many people find it hard to give up, but it is a small price to pay for having a healthy liver. Learn more about alcohol's negative impact on liver disease
