Having a relationship with an alcoholic can be extremely frustrating and frightening. When people who drink to excess have a partner they often do not realize the pain and heart ache they put them through. Partners in these situations have to endure promises that are never kept and more lies than you could imagine.

The alcoholic then goes crying to there ex with more promises they do not intend to keep. It is very hard for anybody who is in a relationship with an alcoholic because they may still love them and think that if they could just stop drinking everything would be all right.

When ending a relationship with an excessive drinker it is often after a long time of believing they could and would change. You need to make it clear you have no intention of coming back until they have been in at least six months of sobriety. This will show the alcoholic partner is getting help and not drinking anymore.

Living with an alcoholic will always have its risks. They may stay sober for a few years then relapse into drinking again. You need to know that alcoholics who have stopped drinking do not usually wish to relapse it can be something that triggers the restart of the drinking.
