What Are The Signs of Alcoholism?

Because it is one of the most common addictions, you probably know some of the signs of alcoholism. But you may not be aware of some of the most come signs of alcohol abuse. One reason for this is that many signs have to be self-identified. Many people are "secret" alcoholics. They appear to function just fine in their public life, but privately, alcohol controls them.

One sign that you are likely aware of is trembling. This is a physical reaction to extensive alcohol use. Alcohol impacts the central nervous system. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. So trembling that is obvious to everyone actually begins as morning shakes. If you live alone, there may not be anyone around when you get up and deal with uncontrollable trembling.

To control the trembling, you are likely to have a drink. Drinking in order to function is another sign of alcoholism. Drinking in order to start the day suggests you are dependent on alcohol. Drinking alone is also a sign. Social drinking in moderation is considered acceptable today. Socializing is basically a reason to drink. If you drink when you are alone, this suggests a physical craving for the alcohol.

One of the most dangerous signs of alcoholism is memory impairment. Lapses in memory that occur while drinking are called black outs. Black outs are red flags. Seek immediate professional assistance if you have a black out. You can cause permanent damage to your health if you continue to drink after experiencing a black out.

Making excuses to drink is a typical sign of alcoholism. You hate your job. Your kids don't listen to a thing you say. You decide you need a drink. You are establishing a pattern of behavior that can lead to alcohol dependency. If you prefer to drink rather than eat, you should look for other signs that you may be addicted to alcohol.

A sign that is not so secret is your reaction when confronted about your alcohol use. If you become angry and upset when someone suggests you have a problem with alcohol, well, you just might. You know you do if you are not able to stop drinking following such a confrontation.

There are common signs of alcoholism. There also are unique signs. If your personal behavior or routine noticeably changes, and those changes occur as a result of your alcohol use, you might be an alcoholic. Your friends and family will notice these changes but may not confront you about them. It is up to you to seek the help you need.
