Liver failure should not be akin to a death sentence. It happens when important parts of your liver fail to work (hence the name), disrupting the global function of the liver. Though it can be quite hard to reverse and will lead to death if not reversed, it is possible to heal a liver that has entered failure.
This condition can have many different causes, but the most common are alcohol, hepatitis, cirrhosis (of alcoholic or non alcoholic origin) and malnutrition. Most of the time liver failure develops over the years with easy to miss symptoms but sometimes it is very quick (i.e. acute) and is very evident.
ALCOHOLIC HEPATITIS
Your liver is responsible for clearing your body of toxic waste and for coordinating all metabolism. It also has important endocrine functions, as well as an imunologic role among many other minor roles. When it fails, all these functions are compromised and death comes quickly. Toxic products pile up in the body and, most important, the liver will not convert fat to sugar and your brain literally starves to death.
The traditional treatment involves removing the cause (always a good idea) and either hope for the best or do a liver transplant. However, there have also been cases of chronic (but not acute) disease that were completely removed following a natural treatment consisting of an adjusted diet and a few herbal treatments. These cases lead to an increasing interest on those measures to treat liver disease and gradually are improving the outcome of patients with liver failure.
